What Are Bulging and Herniated Discs?

A bulging disc – also known as a bulge or disc protrusion – develops when the disc’s outer covering (the annulus) becomes partially torn or damaged, and the inner gel causes the area to bulge. The resulting protrusion can press on a spinal nerve, leading to numbness and tingling, or sciatica. 

A herniated disc has several other names, including a slipped disc, disc extrusion, herniated nucleus pulposis (HNP) and sequestration. Patients with herniated discs may experience sciatica due to the pressure on a spinal nerve or severe swelling.

Torn and Painful Discs Stem Cell Treatment

What Are Torn and Painful Discs?

If you have a torn disc, you may hear it referred to as an annular tear or an HIZ (high-intensity zone), when it’s seen on an MRI image. The result of a torn disc is often “disogenic pain.” The origin of the torn and painful disc is usually an injury to its outer covering. As a result of the tear, painful nerves may grow in the area, making sitting or doing an activity uncomfortable in the lower back. Plus, sciatica may develop due to toxic chemicals leaking from the torn disc and aggravating the spinal nerve.

Why Do Torn and Painful Disc Patients Respond Best to the Regenexx Bone Marrow Concentrate Injection Procedure?

It’s a non-surgical procedure that reinjects the patient with concentrated stem cells taken from the patient’s own bone marrow.
